Fred Södergran
Fred Södergran
Fred grew up in Finland's westernmost region, the archipelago by the Gulf of Bothnia. This diverse, four-season landscape shaped his deep appreciation for nature and laid the foundation for his wilderness skills.
“We used firewood to heat our homes and whether it was taking down trees, or chopping wood – spending time outdoors was always a been a big part of my life. Interacting with the natural world is the most rewarding endeavour I have taken on.”
Fred has worked full-time as an Outdoor Educator and NOLS Instructor for several years, and teaching for NOLS Wilderness Medicine was a natural next step—one we’re grateful he took! For Fred, a rewarding part of his work is building community, meeting great people and new colleagues, and empowering students. He also appreciates the depth of the field and the endless opportunities to develop his skills, sharpen his strengths, and keep learning.
Fred has previously served as a leader and caretaker at a summer camp for disabled youth. He chose public service over mandatory military service and is currently studying Crisis Psychology at the University of Åbo in Finland, focusing on psychological intervention, crisis debriefing for rescue workers and victims, PTSD prevention, and managing the psychological aspects of severe trauma."
